Linux Based Operating Systems and Apps Perservere

It's been years now since we were first introduced to the KDE and GNOME operating systems of Linux. We knew back then that both still had a long way to go until they could compete on solid ground with Windows. Since that time, however, the Linux development community has come a long way, and that seed may have come to bear fruit.

The Linux development community more recently provided us with Ubuntu, the free, Linux based operating system based off of GNOME. Ubuntu made quite a splash in the open source arena, and developed a widespread user base almost overnight. Ubuntu is an African word that means 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. It has a desktop and a server edition, and it contains nearly all of the applications you'll need in an operating system, including web server software, office software, email, and more. There's even a system monitoring tool for Ubuntu. Conky is a lightweight system monitor with advanced capabilities. And it's still all completely free, with no licensing fees.

Now, the Linux development community has taken it one step further. They've developed a Kde Ubuntu version, and named it Kubuntu. Kubuntu is a derivative operating system based on KDE, the K desktop environment, instead of GNOME, and seems to be the platform that the Ubuntu community will be moving forward with.
